Cigarette smoke increases the risk of developing diabetes 2
Cigarette smoke increases the risk of diabetes 2, both for smokers and for those around them. This shows a new study cited by Reuters.
The risk of 2 diabetes increases with the amount of inhaled smoke. The cause of the disease is insulin resistance, in which cells do not react properly to the hormone, a study published in the book Diabetes Care.
Study conducted in the period from 1982 to 2006, were seen 100,000 patients in nursing profession, for 24 years. On average one in 18 had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. About 30 to 10 000 hardcore smokers have developed diabetes annually, compared to 25 to avoid foreign cigarettes and tobacco smoke. The risk was increased in former smokers and passive smokers.
"After taking into consideration the influence of age, weight and openness, ex-smokers were exposed to 12% higher risk of passive smokers. So far no known risk from exposure to passive smoking," said Prof. Nathan Devid of medical school at Harvard.
